26 January 2023 WNISR – Nuclear Power 2022 Did We Pass “Peak Nuclear” Years Ago? IAEA Revises Statistics During 2022, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) unexpectedly withdrew 17 nuclear power reactors from its statistics of operating reactors, created a new status category called “Suspended Operation”, and retroactively modified its data series accordingly. As of 1 January 2023, WNISR considers 411 reactors in operation whereas the IAEA-PRIS website counts 422, a difference of 11 units, the smallest difference between the two data-series in a decade. 24 July 2022 WNISR Akkuyu‑4 in Turkey: Second Construction Start in a Week for the Russian Nuclear Industry—Anyways 4 WNISR, 24 July 2022 On 21 July 2022, Akkuyu Nuclear announced that first concrete was poured for the base slab of the reactor building of Unit 4 of the Turkish Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, marking the official construction start. 21 July 2022 WNISR Russia’s Rosatom Starts Building Egypt’s First Nuclear Reactor—Anyways 3 WNISR, 20 July 2022 Construction of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant has officially started on 20 July 2022 at El-Dabaa city, governorate of Matrouh. The VVER-1200 reactor of Russian design is the first of four such units to be built by Rosatom at the El-Dabaa site, located on the north-west coast of Egypt, by the Mediterranean Sea. 29 June 2022 WNISR Third Nuclear Reactor Construction Start in China in 2022 As of mid-year, no new-build launched yet in any other country WNISR, 29 June 2022 The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced the beginning of the concrete pour for the base of the reactor building at Sanmen-3 in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on 28 June 2022. The act marks the official construction start of the first reactor based on the CAP1000 design, the Chinese adaptation of the Westinghouse AP1000 design.
