World Nuclear Reactor Status as of 1 January 2015
World Nuclear Reactor Status as of 1 January 2015 The Year 2014 is the first one in half a century that no nuclear electricity was generated in Japan. As of 1 January 2015, there were 390 nuclear reactors considered “in operation” in the world, preliminary analysis indicates. Five new reactors started up over the year—three in China (Fangjiashan-1, Fuqing-1, Ningde-2) as in 2013, one each in Argentina (Atucha-2), after 33 years of construction, and Russia (Rostov-3), after 31 years of (…)

Vermont Yankee Reactor Closed
On 29 December 2014, the 42-year old
U.S.
Vermont Yankee reactor generated its last kilowatt-hour and was disconnected from the grid. Owner/operator Energy had decided the closure of the plant in August 2013, when it became apparent that “this asset is not financially viable” (see Another
US
Reactor Scheduled for Closure). Entergy blames low power prices, a high cost structure and “an atmosphere of unpredictability” for the lack of competitiveness. The shutdown decision is all the more (…)

Russian Reactor Rostov‑3 Finally Generating Power
Russian Reactor Rostov-3 Connected to the Grid Russian news agency
TASS
reported that the Rostov-3, located near the city of Volgodonsk, was connected to the national electricity grid for the first time on 27 December 2014. Construction, which originally started in 1983 and had been interrupted several times, took over 31 years. Startup of the
VVER
-1000 pressurized water reactor was delayed numerous times. It is all the more surprising that builder/operator Rosatom told
TASS
that the unit (…)

Fangjiashan‑1 in China Connected to the Grid
Grid connection was confirmed by the China National Nuclear Corporation (
CNNC
) on 4 November 2014 for the
CPR
-1000 reactor at the Fangjiashan plant in China’s eastern coastal province of Zhejiang. Construction began on 26 December 2008 and startup took place with a delay of almost one year compared to the originally planned grid connection in December 2013. A second reactor is under construction at the site and is now planned to begin operations in October 2015, one year after the original (…)

Court Rules Against Construction of Karachi Reactors in Pakistan
Court Rules Against Construction of Karachi Reactors in Pakistan 19 October 2014 The Sindh High Court on 16 October 2014 barred Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (
PAEC
) from continuing work on two new nuclear reactors being built near the city of Karachi, Pakistan, without adhering to environmental laws. A temporary stay order was granted by the Court on a petition filed by a group of citizens. The petitioners cited the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory (…)

Oldest Indian Reactor Will Not Restart
After 10 years in Long Term Outage (
LTO
) it was reported on 6 September 2014 that there will be no restart for the first unit of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (
RAPS
-1), located at Rawatbata, 64 km southwest of Kota in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan. The 100
MW
Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (
PHWR
), which was supplied to India under a 1963 agreement with Canada, operated from 1972 to 2004, though with multiple extended shutdowns. A formal decision by the Indian Government to (…)

First Reactor Grid Connection in Fuqing, China
First Reactor Grid Connection in Fuqing, China 22 August 2014 The first reactor at Fuqing was connected to the grid on 20 August 2014, according to the China National Nuclear Corporation (
CNNC
). This is the second Chinese reactor to start operating in 2014, after Ningde-2, that was connected to the grid in January, but only the third one in the world. Argentina started up its Atucha-2 unit in June 2014, after 33 years of construction. Construction of the Fuqing unit 1

Unit 2 of Ostrovets Plant in Belarus Under Construction
On 2 June 2014, first concrete was poured for the 2
nd
reactor at Belarus’s first nuclear power plant at Ostrovets. Construction was started on the 1
st
reactor in November 2013. Both units are Russian designed
AES1200
MWe reactors and have been purchased with a loan provided by the Russian state-owned Vnesheconombank of $10 billion. The government of neighboring Lithuania has repeatedly criticized the safety of the project and has particular concerns as the proposed site is only 50 km from (…)

Finnish Regulator Approves Olkiluoto‑3 Instrumentation & Control System
Finnish Regulator Approves Olkiluoto-3 Instrumentation & Control System After several years of delay, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (
STUK
) on 10 April 2014 has approved the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system for the Olkiluoto-3 (
OL3
) European Pressurized water Reactor (
EPR
) under construction in Finland. Teollisuuden Voima Oy, (
TVO
), the owner of the
OL3
, welcomed the decision, but pointed out that for final approval of the I&C architecture
