WNISR
(Updated 18 March 2020) World Nuclear Reactor Status as of 1 January 2020 (with dataviz)
Operating fleet and construction apparently stable
2019 for Global Nuclear Power in a Nutshell Six reactor startups (7 less than scheduled), 5 closures, 5 construction starts (+ one construction restart). Three new reactors entered Long-Term Outage, 2 were restarted, 2 were closed. Globally, 415 reactors are operating (as one year ago), 49 are under construction. Three countries started up new reactors in 2019, Russia added three, China two and South Korea one. The total of six new startups compares with 13 units scheduled for grid (...)

Russia Connects World’s First Floating Mini Nuclear Power Plant to Grid
WNISR
, 27 December 2019 The world’s first floating nuclear power plant was connected to the grid on 19 December 2019. The Akademik Lomonosov, with two reactors of the
KLT
-40S design, began generating electricity for the Chaun-Bilibino network in Pevek, on the Chukotka Peninsula in Russia’s east Arctic. It remains unclear, however, whether both reactors were connected to the grid and when. Rosatom’s Director General Alexey Likhachev stated on the day of “grid connection” that, “Akademik (...)

48‑Year‑Old Swiss Reactor Mühleberg Closed
WNISR
, 27 December 2019 After 48 years in operation, the Mühleberg Nuclear Power Plant (
KKM
) in Switzerland was closed on 20 December 2019. This leaves the country with four operating reactors. As reported in
WNISR2019
, in October 2013, Mühleberg operator
BKW
announced that it would close the 373
MW
Boiling Water Reactor (
BWR
) in 2019, due to “indefinable and unquantifiable… technical, economic and political uncertainties [that] could increase the economic risks of long-term (...)

US
Reactors Threatened by Sea‑Level Rise Granted 80‑Year Operating License
WNISR
, 8 December 2019 For the first time in the history of nuclear power, the
U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (
NRC
) on 4 December 2019 granted two commercial nuclear reactors, Turkey Point units 3&4, a second 20-year license extension permitting them to operate until they are 80 years old. The Turkey Point reactors, located 30 km south of Miami, Florida, and operated by Florida Power & Light (
FPL
), were connected to the grid on 2 November 1972 and 21 June 1973 respectively (...)

Iran: Construction Restart of Busheer‑2
Iran: Construction Restart of Bushehr-2
WNISR
, 14 November 2019 Basemat concrete for the reactor building has been poured, usually representing the official construction start, at the Bushehr unit 2 reactor as of 10 November 2019, according to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (
AEOI
). Excavation for that foundation of the unit started on 31 October 2017. However, originally, construction had started in 1976. The site also hosts the Bushehr-1 reactor, where construction had (...)

China: First Commercial Reactor Construction‑Start in Three Years
China: First Commercial Reactor Construction-Start in Three Years
WNISR
, 18 October 2019 China National Nuclear Corporation (
CNNC
), on 16 October 2019, announced the construction start of Zhangzhou-1, a Hualong or
HPR
-1000 design. Phase 1 of the project at Zhangzhou, located in south east China’s Fuijan province, was originally planned to be based on two Westinghouse
AP1000
reactors. However, as reported by Reuters, citing a Chinese energy academic, “the problem with
AP1000
—the delays, (...)

Three Mile Island‑1 Closed at Age 45
WNISR
, 22 September 2019 The Three Mile Island (
TMI
) Unit 1 was closed on 20 September 2019, the plant owner Exelon Corp. announced. The 45-year old 819
MW
Pressurized Water Reactor (
PWR
), located near Middletown in Pennsylvania was connected to the grid on 19 June 1974. The closure brought to an end nuclear generation at the site where Unit 2 in 1979 suffered a partial core-melt accident. “Today we celebrate the proud legacy of
TMI
Unit 1 and the thousands of employees who shared our (...)

Closure of Chin Shan‑2 Ends Operations at Taiwan’s First Nuclear Power Plant
WNISR
, 22 September 2019 The Chin Shan-2 reactor (also known as Jinshan and First Nuclear Power Plant) was officially closed on 15 July 2019 when its 40-year operating license expired. The reactor, located in Shimen, New Taipei, in northern Taiwan, had remained shut down since June 2017—and thus had been considered by
WNISR
as in Long-Term Outage (
LTO
) up until 15 July. The closure of Unit 2 brings to an end electricity generation at Taiwan’s first nuclear power plant, following the (...)

Second European Pressurized Water Reactor Starts Up… in China
WNISR
, 30 June 2019 On 28 June 2019, China connected the second European Pressurized Water Reactor (
EPR
) at Taishan to the grid. The first unit, Taishan-1, had generated its first power on 29 June 2018. Despite its name, Europe is still waiting for an
EPR
to come online. One reactor has been under construction at Olkiluoto in Finland since 2005, and another one since 2007 at the Flamanville site in France. Both projects experienced multiple design problems, management failures and (...)

Pilgrim Nuclear Reactor Closes... 13 Years Before License Expires
WNISR
, 4 June 2019 On 31 May 2019, Entergy permanently shut down its 668
MW
Pilgrim reactor, which was connected to the grid the first time on 19 July 1972. The 47-year old General Electric
MK1
Boiling Water Reactor (
BWR
), located on Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts, was described by the
NRC
in 1986 as ’’one of the worst-run’’ nuclear plants in the country. Nearly twenty years later little had apparently changed, with Senator Ed Markey describing the plant has having “one of the worst (...)
