Fukushima Units 5 and 6 to be Decommissioned
Fukushima Daiichi Units 5 and 6 to be Decommissioned Bowing to the inevitable, Prime Minister Abe during a visit to the stricken Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear site called on
TEPCO
to decommission Fukushima-Daiichi reactor units 5 and 6, and devote its attention to managing the nuclear crisis. “In order for them to concentrate on this, I have asked them to decommission the No. 5 and No. 6 reactors that are now halted”, Abe told reporters and that Naomi Hirose, the
TEPCO
president, informed him (…)

Japan Nuclear Free, Last Operating Reactor Shut Down
In the evening of 15 September 2013, Kansai Electric Power Company (
KEPCO
) shut down the last operating nuclear reactor in Japan. Unit 4 of the Ohi nuclear power plant was closed for maintenance, refueling and upgrading less than two weeks after unit 3 was shut down. Japanese regulation requires the shutdown of reactors at least once every 13 months. Some analysts saythat the “nuclear freeze” will last at least until January 2014, following the issuance of new safety regulation in July 2013. (…)

Japan Closes One of Two Remaining Operating Reactors
On 2 September 2013, the third unit of the Ohi nuclear power plant was closed leaving unit 4 the only reactor generating any electricity across Japan. However, with the other reactor also to close, by September 15, the country will be without any nuclear power plants in operation. The closure of the units is initially for routine refueling and maintenance, however, it is unclear when the reactors will restart as they must now conform to new rules the Nuclear Regulation Authority (
NRA
) issued (…)

US
Reactor Scheduled for Closure
On 27 August 2013 Entergy announced that it would close the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor at the end of its current fuel cycle, which will be towards the end of 2014. The power plant started up in 1972 and was licensed to operate until 2032. The plant was granted a 20 year life extension only in March 2011. The decision to close the reactor was “driven by sustained low power prices, high cost structure and wholesale electricity market design flaws for Vermont Yankee plant”, the company (…)

Slovakia: Environmental Law Broken for Mochovce Power Plant Construction
Slovakia: Environmental Law Broken for Mochovce Power Plant Construction On 21 August 2013, the Slovakian Supreme Court ruled that the national nuclear regulator had broken domestic law during the Environmental Impact Assessment process by refusing to let Greenpeace Slovakia take part in the licensing process for units 3 and 4 at the Mochovce nuclear power plant. The regulator has said that it will now undertake another round of public consultation, but has allowed construction to continue (…)

Duke Energy Abandons Reactor Projects in the
US
as
EDF
Exits On 2 August 2013, Duke Energy, the largest utility in the U.S., announced it was shelving plans to build two reactors at the Levy site in Florida, despite having spent $1 billion on preparatory works. The utility has blamed the slow licensing process; however, the decision appears rather being a result of a larger trend for Duke Energy and nuclear power in general in the United States. In the last few months Duke Energy has (…)

New Reactor Under Construction in South Korea
On 19 June 2013 construction at the second unit at the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in South Korea officially started. The Government gave approval for the project in April 2009 with work beginning on the site for both units in May 2012, with construction formally starting on the first reactor in July 2012. The completion of the two units is scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The project changed its name in 2013, at the request of the local fishermen, as problems at the plants had reportedly led (…)

Two More Reactors Permanently Closed in the United States
On 7 June 2013 Southern California Edison (
SCE
) announced that despite a spending of over $500 million on repairs and replacement power they would permanently close units two and three at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (
SONGS
). The decision comes after a 16 month battle to restart. Unit 1 at the station was closed in 1992. Californian Senator Barbara Boxer, Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, said of the decision: “This nuclear plant had a defective redesign (…)

Construction Start at Second Unit in United Arab Emirates (
UAE
)
On 28 May 2013 construction officially began at the second unit of the Barakah plant in the United Arab Emirates (
UAE
). Present at the concrete pouring to mark the event were officials from the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (
ENEC
) and the prime contractor, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (
KEPCO
). The reactor is scheduled to take five years to build and therefore be operational by 2018, a year behind the first unit. Each unit at the plant is a 1.4

reactor. The total (…)

Kewaunee Plant in Wisconsin Closed
On 7 May 2013, Dominion, “one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy”, closed its Kewaunee nuclear power plant in Wisconsin. The plant owner had intended to sell the facility but failed to identify a buyer. The 39-year old 535
MW
reactor was first connected to the grid on 8 April 1974 and is the second
US
reactor to shut down in 2013, after operator Progress Energy decided in February to close Crystal River for good. The decision is particularly remarkable as “despite (…)
