Earlier today, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan revealed that ratings agency Moody’s has placed South Africa’s downgrade under review.

Amongst some of the outcomes of this imminent visit, Moody’s reportedly also wants to see if the country can rectify its fiscal deficit in the midst of large outstanding government projects like the NHI and the nuclear programme.

Xolani Gwala spoke to Lead Author and publisher of the Annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report, Mycle Schneider about the global trends and alternatives to nuclear energy for South Africa.

Schneider said that the question is about how to fulfill energy service needs while examinating the affordability and sustainability of nuclear as an alternative.
